Our fridge is currently packed to the brim with seeds! They're placed at a temperature of 1-5C and left for between 60-90 days to cold stratify (sometimes taking a little longer). This mimics the affects a winter would have and breaks there dormancy so they're ready to be planted in the spring. Doing this allows us to have control of the temperature they’re stored at.
All seeds will have a different method for germination so its worth doing your research before storing. The majority of these need a damp medium to keep them moist over the stratifying process, seeds such as magnolia's and styrax's. While other seeds such as rhododendrons and embothrians need to be stored dry.
Please see link to how to grow rhododendron's from seed: Rhododendron - Propagation - Burncoose Nurseries
